College Grad at 84

Helen Katz, 84, proves you’re never too old to chase your dreams. This past May, Ms. Katz graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the Adult Continuing Education program at New York’s Queens College. Ms. Katz spent 14 years earning her degree and says she never felt isolated from other students in her classes and actually learned from them.

Born to Polish immigrants in Harlem, Ms. Katz graduated from high school in 1940 and planned to go on to Hunter College. However, her mother insisted she find a job and a husband. Thus, Ms. Katz began a career as a secretary and stenographer. She married her husband in 1951. When he died of leukemia in 1993, she decided to fulfill her lifelong dream. Along the way, she battled cancer four times and is now cancer free.
