Survey: Taxes up 10% for New Yorkers

New Yorkers continued to have the highest combined state and local tax burden in the nation during the 2004 – 2005 federal fiscal year, according to a research arm of the Business Council of New York State.

The figures from the council’s Public Policy Institute show New York’s total tax burden per person was $5,770, up 9.9% from the previous fiscal year. New York ranked 11th for state taxes only.

The above is particularly disturbing to seniors living in New York who rely on a fixed income. In many cases, these folks have been living in the area for decades. They’ve helped make it the desirable locale it is today. Their roots and families are here and any increase puts them at risk of being unable to afford to stay in their homes.
